Pink

I Dream of a World Void of Breast Cancer

It was the fall of 2010, Breast Cancer awareness month was right around the corner. For some unknown reason we were moved to join the cause; never being exposed to this dreadful disease through a loved one or our paths in life.

It began with a "Strides Against Cancer" walk (sponsored by NVO). Along with "Offspring #6", we joined the fight. It was a thought-provoking day of heart-wrenching stories; beautiful women, their support peeps, funky pink wigs, pink bras worn on the outside of clothing, and countless other interesting pink bits that one does not see every day.

Strides Against Breast Cancer

We had never seen so much pink, nor had we ever been around such a caring energy; it was so humbling. It was wonderful to see how excited our youngest was to participate. She jumped right in; up early, ready to go and very appreciative of the opportunity.

Next came the vow to wear pink everyday of October. I'm not talking just a little pink either, but pink practically from head to toe. A lovely breast cancer necklace was purchased (one of those "proceeds go to breast cancer" purchases...with hopes that most of them did, in an attempt to justify the borderline selfish purchase.) Worn any chance possible.

Wearing pink each day, at work, lead to a conversation with one of my dear co-workers who shared with me that her sister was suffering from stage three breast cancer. A hard-working single mother. Heartbreaking.

I shared this sad news with my best crocheting buddy and friend who is also a friend of my co-worker. We had recently been chatting about what do with our ever increasing mounds of leftover yarn. So difficult to discard...memories of beloved projects and gifts from the heart; made with love. Hmmmmm...an idea slowly emerges.

Together we pooled our leftover yarn and the breast cancer afghan seed was planted. Made from scraps of yarn from past crocheted gifts, certainly this yarn must possess an energy that new yarn would otherwise not possess. An afghan made with triple love energy; love from the past projects, love with each stitch of this present afghan, and our loving hope for her future. Hoping she will be wrapped in the warmth and love of our well wishes and maybe, just maybe, a little healing energy.
