Reupholstered Appliances for Commitment-Phobes

...or...
Quilting the Washer and Dryer...

Yes, it is indeed true...I reupholstered the washer and dryer:

and, yes, many may think I have "lost the plot" with this one. :-)

But, one thing I have learned is that once you have "lost the plot" you are in good company:
You see that with this rose bush "before" and "after" from this post,
my dear friend Linda of Linda's Crafty Corner
claims she has "lost the plot", as well.
She replaced the dead foliage of her bush with beautiful red granny roses!
You see what I mean about good company?
Come join us, we will be acting silly and having gobs of fun!

Wanna' see how non-committal I am?
Then scroll-on...

Started with this:
I forgot to take a picture before I started painting,
I remembered in the midst and took this photo.
The area went from a darker green to light blue. :-)
 Here's after painting.

I desired a bright and welcoming area since this is in the front and center of our home.
That's the door leading in from the garage directly into the kitchen.
It's gotta' have some snap, for heaven's sake!
so then....

I took some fabric and ric-rac "this and thats" from the scrap bin.
Threw in some liquid starch.
and literally starch-glued the fabric to the appliances.
Let it dry over night.
Then trimmed it up with a little ric-rac held on with hot-glue:
brought in a coordinating trash can:
And there you have it!
A no-sew non-committal re-done appliance set.
And if I tire of it...I simple peel it off, sponge down the appliances,
throw the fabric in the washer and it's as if it never ever happened!
And when questioned by the authorities, I will simply reply,
"Now, what weird thing did I do?...hmmmmm...show me."
Tee, hee. :-)

(Oh and BTW this "lost the plot" phrase was unknown to me, until Linda came along with this post ..these English folk are crafty ones! I Googled it and could not believe I have lived my life, to this point, without it.
And, as you can see, I have now added it to my idiom repertoire.)

Thanks Linda!

  7. Haha - you all make me laugh. Sounds like I really am in good company! Also note that these appliances are very old. I would have a difficult time replacing them with the new space ship looking kind because they work perfectly. I'll jut keep changing the fabric until they go kaput. :-)

  8. Astri how cool is that, I just love it. If that is losing the plot, then count me in, I am sold on the idea. The world needs this Astri so spread the word. I do love the combination of colours and patterns, just gorgeous, well done. A wonderful post, thank you

  11. Wait a sec ... if you RE-upholstered your appliances they must have been upholstered before. Where are THOSE photos? I'm guessing you used to have leather with metal studs.... (Just kidding of course.)

You are a genius, Astri. This is really brilliant - especially the liquid starch as glue bit. I love that you can wash away the evidence whenever you choose. And the washer / dryer look so cheerful now.

P.S. I've never heard of losing the plot before - it does seem a handy phrase. Thanks for enlightening us!

  14. I am still laughing (but in a good way) I loved your funny but well chosen phrases today they made me giggle but the end result made me smile. I think that is a day on this planet well spent. When the children go into a tired melt and over emotional state about 4pm we say 'they have lost the plot' we use it all the time! Jo X

  19. Oh my, you have me thinking of my quite ugly refrigerator! I wonder... you could even do this with seasonal fabrics.
